Frequently Asked Question

What is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a holistic system of healthcare that has been practiced for thousands of years. It encompasses a wide range of practices, including acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietary therapy, cupping therapy, and more. TCM is rooted in ancient Chinese philosophy and understanding of the body's natural balance and energy flow.

At its core, TCM views the human body as a dynamic system where health is maintained by the smooth and balanced flow of vital energy called "Qi" (pronounced "chee") through pathways known as meridians. This energy, Qi, runs throughout the body and is believed to be essential for maintaining physical, mental, and emotional well-being. TCM emphasizes the interconnectedness of the body, mind, and spirit and seeks to restore balance when illness or imbalance occurs.

TCM practitioners use a variety of diagnostic techniques, such as pulse and tongue diagnosis, to assess a person's overall health and identify any underlying imbalances. One of the most well-known components of TCM is acupuncture, which involves the insertion of thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body to regulate the flow of Qi and promote healing. Acupuncture has been widely researched and is recognized for its effectiveness in addressing various health issues, including pain management, stress reduction, and improving overall well-being.

In addition to acupuncture, herbal medicine is another integral part of TCM. TCM herbal formulas consist of combinations of herbs tailored to an individual's specific needs and constitution. These herbal remedies can help address a wide range of health concerns, from respiratory issues to digestive problems.

TCM also places a strong emphasis on preventive care, focusing on maintaining balance and addressing health imbalances before they become severe. Lifestyle and dietary recommendations are often provided to support the body's natural healing abilities and promote long-term wellness.

Overall, Traditional Chinese Medicine offers a comprehensive and holistic approach to health and healing, emphasizing the body's innate capacity to maintain balance and promoting overall well-being. It is used to address a wide range of conditions and is increasingly recognized for its role in integrative healthcare worldwide.

What is acupuncture and is it safe?

Acupuncture is a key component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and is a holistic healthcare practice that involves the insertion of thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body. These points, known as acupuncture points or acupoints, are located along pathways called meridians through which vital energy, known as "Qi" (pronounced "chee"), flows.

The primary goal of acupuncture is to regulate the flow of Qi and restore balance within the body. It is based on the principle that imbalances or blockages in the flow of Qi can lead to various physical, mental, and emotional health issues. By inserting needles into acupoints, acupuncturists aim to stimulate the body's natural healing mechanisms, promote the circulation of Qi and blood, and alleviate symptoms.

Acupuncture is widely recognized for its effectiveness in addressing a range of health concerns, including pain management (such as back pain, migraines, and arthritis), stress reduction, anxiety, insomnia, digestive disorders, and more. Research has shown that acupuncture can have a positive impact on various physiological processes, including pain modulation, inflammation reduction, and the release of natural pain-relieving chemicals like endorphins.

It is a safe and minimally invasive procedure, with the needles used being very thin and typically causing minimal discomfort. Many people find acupuncture to be a relaxing experience, and sessions usually last around 20-45 minutes. While acupuncture is often used as a standalone therapy, it can also complement other medical treatments and integrative healthcare approaches. Acupuncturists tailor treatment plans to each individual's unique health needs, making it a highly personalized and holistic form of care.

What can I expect as a new patient and how can I prepare for my appointment?

As a new patient with S&Y Mobile Acupuncture, we want to ensure you have a comfortable and positive experience. Here's what you can generally expect during your initial visit:

1. Comprehensive Assessment: Your first visit typically begins with a comprehensive assessment which includes a patient health questionnaire with treatment consents. You'll have the opportunity to discuss your health concerns, medical history, and any symptoms you're experiencing. This conversation helps us understand your unique health needs.

You may expedite this process by completing the new patient health questionnaire & consents prior to the appointment and email them to us at symobileacu@gmail.com. You may request the forms ahead of time upon scheduling your first appointment.

2. Physical Examination: Depending on your specific condition, we may perform a physical examination. This can include checking your pulse, tongue, and palpating acupuncture points to gather additional diagnostic information.

3. Individualized Treatment Plan: Based on the information gathered during your assessment, we will create an individualized treatment plan tailored to your health goals. This plan may include acupuncture, herbal remedies, dietary recommendations, or other Chinese medicine modalities.

4. Acupuncture Treatment: If acupuncture is recommended, we will explain the process and ensure you are comfortable. Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin, sterile needles into specific points on your body. Most patients find the experience relaxing and virtually painless.

Please wear loose clothing that can be easily rolled up. Try to have a light meal or snack prior to the session.

5. Duration of Initial Visit: The duration of your first consult with treatment session can vary, but it typically lasts around an hour to an hour and half. Subsequent sessions may be shorter.

6. Questions and Education: We encourage questions and open communication. Your acupuncturist will take the time to address any concerns you may have and provide education about the treatment plan and Chinese medicine principles.

7. Follow-Up Recommendations: After your initial session, we will discuss follow-up recommendations. These may include the frequency of treatments, self-care practices, dietary guidelines, and lifestyle modifications that can support your healing journey.

Recommendation notes will be sent to your email within 3 business days of the appointment.

8. Relaxation: Many patients experience a sense of relaxation and well-being during and after acupuncture sessions. It's common to leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. In some cases, you may feel ULTRA relaxed so please take care of operating any vehicles after your session.

9. Subsequent Visits: Depending on your condition and treatment plan, you may need multiple sessions for optimal results. We will provide guidance on the recommended frequency and duration of your visits. Typically, the average number of sessions for individuals can range anywhere from 5 to 10 appointments in order to achieve best results.

Remember that your journey to improved health and wellness is unique. We're here to support you every step of the way, and open communication is key. Feel free to share your experiences, ask questions, and actively participate in your healing process. We look forward to partnering with you on your path to better health!

How many treatments will I need?

The number of acupuncture treatments you'll need can vary widely depending on several factors, including your specific health condition, its severity, and your treatment goals. Here are some key considerations to keep in mind:

1. Condition Severity: The severity of your health condition plays a significant role in determining the number of treatments required. Acute conditions, such as a recent injury or mild pain, may respond more quickly and may require only a few sessions for relief. Chronic conditions, on the other hand, often necessitate ongoing or maintenance treatments to manage symptoms effectively.

2. Treatment Goals: Your treatment plan will align with your health goals. Are you seeking relief from pain, managing a chronic condition, or pursuing overall wellness and balance? The complexity of your goals can influence the duration of your treatment plan.

3. Initial Assessment: During your initial assessment, we will evaluate your health history, current symptoms, and any underlying imbalances. Based on this assessment, they will provide an estimated number of sessions required to achieve your goals.

4. Response to Treatment: Each person's response to acupuncture can vary. Some individuals experience immediate relief after just a few sessions, while others may require several treatments to notice significant improvements. We will monitor your progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed.

5. Frequency: The frequency of your treatments can also impact the total number needed. In some cases, particularly for acute conditions or severe symptoms, frequent sessions (e.g., two to three times per week) may be recommended initially. As your condition stabilizes, the frequency may decrease to once a week or less.

6. Maintenance: Even after your primary symptoms have improved, periodic maintenance sessions can help sustain your progress and promote overall well-being. Some people choose to continue with monthly or seasonal acupuncture sessions as part of their preventive healthcare routine.

7. Individualized Care: It's important to remember that acupuncture provides individualized care. Your treatment plan is tailored to your unique needs and health goals. Therefore, the number of sessions needed can vary significantly from person to person.

8. Open Communication: Effective communication with your acupuncturist is essential throughout your treatment journey. If you have concerns, questions, or notice changes in your condition, discuss them during your sessions. Your practitioner can adjust your treatment plan accordingly.

While it's challenging to provide an exact number of sessions upfront, trust the guidance of our qualified acupuncturist to determine the best course of treatment for your specific needs. S&Y Mobile Acupuncture's expertise, combined with your active involvement and commitment, will play a vital role in achieving your health and wellness goals.

Other conditions we can help with include Neurogenic Bladder Dysfunction and Parkinson's Disease; as a complementary approach, helping to alleviate symptoms like tremors, stiffness, and mobility limitations associated with Parkinson's Disease.

Acupuncture has exhibited promise in stroke rehabilitation, assisting in motor recovery, balance enhancement, and overall functional improvement. Dr. Son Duong is also well versed in neuro-acupuncture with years of study and practice. We are confident we can assist with these conditions.

Acupuncture has been found to alleviate stress and anxiety, promoting healthier eating habits and, consequently, weight loss.

For those affected by hormonal dysregulation that affects their weight, Chinese herbal medicine, often paired with acupuncture, works to regulate hormones involved in metabolism and weight management, such as insulin and leptin.
